Snuff manufacturing national heritage

Logo Nationale Inventaris Immaterieel Erfgoed Nederland

The Dutch Intangible Cultural Heritage has added the craft of Snuifreder to the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage (VIE) in The Netherlands.

The request for the craft was supported by The Historic Society Roterodamum, The Heritagehouse Zuid-Holland and the committee Zuid-Holland of the Heritage Society Heemschut

On Saturday 9th of may - National Windmill Day - the signing of the certificate took place and the shield was handed over to miller and snuifreder Jaap Bes by the chairman of VIE Mr. Willem Bijleveld.

The issueing took place in restaurant De Tuin located in between the mills De Ster and De Lelie. From historical point of view it was a special locationat since De Tuin is the former home of the Hioolen family, snuff and karotten manufactureres who once owned the De Ster and De Lelie.

Aad van Strien has made a beautiful series of pictures of the celebrations.

Windshaft revolutions 2014

The number of windshaft revolutions is counted yearly for the statistics and for a provincial subsidy. This year De Ster made 132.000 revolutions and De Lelie 91.000.

Millers express the speed of the mill is usually in the number of sails which are passing the mill body each minute. Depending on the windforce, speed varies between 20 and 80 sails/minute. The speed of the wind shaft is than between 5 and 20 revolutions per minute. Assuming an average speed, millers therefore need more than 160 hours with sufficient windforce to reach 100,000 revolutions.

On the mill database for many mills the amount of revolutions is listed. The 'champions' in this list manage more than 1 miljoen revolutions yearly.

Report experience fence presentation

The experience fence at De Lelie is unveiled on Saturdag, december 14th by Manuel Kneepkens. After a word of welcome by Sander van Lanen Manuel Kneepkens explained in a short speech the historic link between Rotterdam and the tobacco industry. At its peak in the mid-19th century more than one third of the workforce of Rotterdam was employed in the tobacco industry. De Ster en De Lelie together with the Karottenfabriek behind De Lelie and restaurant De Tuin as the former owner home is one of the few reminders of this period and therefore it is important to deal with them carefully. Therefore he also regretted that the Karottenfabriek is not maintained at the moment. Although the expierence fence is a valuable addition to bring the history of the mills and the tobacco industry to the attention it would have been even better when this could be presented also in a permanent exhibition in the Karrotenfabriek. Mr. Kneepkens concluded his speech with a poem after which the experience fence was unveiled.

The slide show below gives an impression of the presentation. The pictures are made by Aad van Strien and Nico Kemp.

One windshaft, three mills...

During archive research discovered Mr. Leo Middelkoop that the windshaft of De Ster (the shaft where the wings are attached te) was originally made for one of the mills of the Hazerswoudse polder. The cast iron shaft was made in 1876 by foundry 'The Prince of Orange' in The Hague. The shaft has served in Hazerswoude until 1914 and after the demolition of the mills there it was used in the Oudenhoorn cornmill. In 1968 the shaft was during the reconstruction of De Ster. Therefore De Ster is the third windmill where this windshaft is used. The picture below shows the Oudenhoorn cornmill. (Source: Streekarchief Voorne-Putten en Rozenburg):

In the past year, the millwright reconstrueerd one of the two millstones for snuff tobacco in De Lelie. This grinder was used in the past in the last stage of the production of snuff

These millstones are removed in the thirties and now reinstalled. The wish to reconstruct at least one of the two couples of millstones was longstanding and this reconstruction makes equipment in De Lelie more complete.
